HATE ME TEACHERS BUT YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN A RAW DEAL…AGAIN.
I laughed like a mad
man as I watched some teachers merry themselves to utopia in celebration of the
Supreme Court judgment that would mean the least paid teacher would pocket a
cool 26k plus up from 15k.
If you’re a teacher and
you’re still celebrating Monday’s Supreme Court ruling then you must either be
naïve or otherwise ill-informed of the history behind TSC-Teacher’s wrangles.
This is all politics my friends and allow me to remind you some few bitter
facts about these seemingly un-ending ‘feud’ between the TSC and her employees.
History and by fact,
the teacher factor in politics and most importantly in elections was paramount.
This reality is based on the fact that teachers’ contribution in votes always
determined the victor in every election. It all dates back to the Moi era
whereby the political pundits and advisors to Moi saw the importance and the
significance of keeping the teacher loyal to the powers that be.
Now, out of greed and
hunger for political mileage, it was therefore necessary to ‘bribe’ teachers
with the motive of keeping them to support the government. And the best way to
achieve this was promise teachers an un-realistic pay rise.
If you look keenly at
the way the courts and the ministry in charge of education have been handling
the teachers’ case, you will notice that just before elections, teachers are
promised an increase in salary. This is so true even during Nga’nga’s tenure as
Sec-Gen to KNUT.
If I were you I would
have been praying hard and hoping that this trend stops. In fact Uhuru is using
the same card Moi and Kibaki used. It’s called the carrot-business card whereby
a carrot is dangled across the faces of teachers to get them confused. Afterwards
they are dragged over elections with mouthwatering promises. This usually
happens and in no time you will see teachers shouting and later line up in long
queues to vote for the same people who will just take them for a ride once
again.
Hate me all you want teachers
but you’ve been given a raw deal again...You just wait and see.
